The Camden County Child Assault Prevention Program
Gibbsboro is very fortunate. Receiving a grant to fund this state wide program, Gibbsboro becomes one of many school districts in the Camden County area learning about how to be "Safe, Strong and Free".
Children of all ages and grades are being encouraged to trust their "inner" feelings with regard to what is right and wrong. Physical, emotional, sexual abuse as well as neglect are all topics discussed at the junior high level (7th and 8th grades). The elementary team of presenters focus more on being "safe" and knowing how to protect yourself. They even practice a "yell" that might help them if confronted by a stranger!
Parents were invited to a two hour inservice at the last HSA meeting to find out all about this state wide program which has been hailed as a wonderful program to help children learn to protect themselves. Teachers were inserviced as well so that they could be prepared should any of the children have questions or concerns.
In Cherry Hill, a child was recently recognized for saving her mother when a stranger came to their house. Thwarting the robbery attempt, she was written up in the newspaper (Philadelphia Inquirer 3/21/99) and credited the CAP Program for teaching her what to do!
