Winning Essay - Miss Gibbsboro 2000

Katherine Balut

If I had unlimited resources, I would do a number of things to make Gibbsboro a better community. First, I would start with the basics. I'd make sure that people would always have a supply of food in case they lost their jobs, were very poor, or got very sick. I would make sure that people would always have clothing. Also, I would make sure that people would never lose their house. There would be a way for them to borrow money until they could pay for their house themselves. I would make sure that every child who believes in Christmas, would be able to celebrate no matter what the parents financial status was. I'd make sure they have a holiday meal, a Christmas tree, and presents under that tree.

A clean community is a proud community. I would also use my unlimited resources to keep Gibbsboro clean. I would make sure that the parks are clean and the streets are clean. I'd help those who need help keeping their house maintained, by lawn service, landscaping, and house painting. Next for a better community, people have to know each other. If you don't know your neighbor, you don't care for them as much. That is why I would build a community center for Gibbsboro. In this community center, I would have a swimming pool for summer fun and keeping cool. I would also have an area for athletics. There would be an indoor basketball court, ping pong tables, pool tables, bowling alley, an ice and/or roller skating rink. Outside I would have a baseball field, field hockey field, soccer field, golf range, and more basketball courts. On the inside of the center, it would not be all indoor athletics or swimming. There would be an area for those who like to study, read , watch movies, or just relax by listening to music and talking. I'd also have a snack bar and places where people can play card games, chess, and checkers. There would also be an area for computers that are hooked up to the Internet.

Every person can participate in an organized activity. I would have organized sports leagues, Bingo games, dances, arts and crafts, and movie nights. I would also have day care for parents who need babysitters for their children, while they are enjoying these activities. I would expand the day care services for when parents are at work. This service would help parents take care of their children after school instead of having the kids go home to an empty house.
As you can see, if Gibbsboro had unlimited resources, there would be so much that could be done to make a community more like family. It could bring people closer together and all other communities would use us as a model for their own.
